Dressing for Winter Comfort
Weather in the Adirondacks can change day by day, moment by moment at times. Having the proper clothing can increase your enjoyment even if the weather turns unfavorable. As an Adirondack Guide once said, "There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing." If you are warm and dry on the inside, your comfort level and enthusiasm remain high regardless of what the weather is doing. Here are some guidelines on how to prepare for your outdoor activities.
Winter Pre-Trip Information
Clothing
Utilize the layering principle: layer your clothes to prevent overheating and overcooling of the body.
Clothing should be made of synthetic material (polar fleece-polypropylene) or wool. No Cotton-it absorbs moisture like a sponge which will become wet against the skin and rob you of your body heat.
Layer 1: mid-weight or light weight polypropylene underwear which will transport perspiration away from the skin and evaporate it. Recommend a long sleeve top and long johns, and a liner sock.
Layer 2: acts as an insulator for layer one. It requires adjustment by adding / sub-tracting more layers to regulate body temperature.
Top: wool shirt, sweater, or fleece pullover, and a insulated vest jacket.
Bottom: a pile or wool pant with tights or wool pants.
Also: a wool cap or balaclava (full head and face protection), heavy wool socks, wool finger mittens with shells, or gortex gloves with pile liners.
Layer 3: water proof jacket or parka shell with hood , along with pants shell that resists wind, rain, and snow.
