Lake Placid – Mirror Lake in Lake Placid, right outside the front door of our Adirondack ski hotel, just may be one of the best winter playgrounds in the entire country – so much to do and most of it free of charge.
What winter activities are available at Mirror Lake?
We can start with the two rinks that the Mirror Lake Inn staff maintains just outside the Cottage Café. How convenient. You can skate and play hockey (with nets) until you’re ready to drop. At that point, it’s time to pop off the blades and walk-in for lunch and a beverage.
If the weather and conditions cooperate, our local Town of North Elba crew sweeps a skating lane around the perimeter of Mirror Lake, offering a lap of about two miles.
Can you snowshoe at Mirror Lake in Lake Placid?
Interested in snowshoeing? No worries. Stop by the front desk and get a pair free of charge – first come, first served. You are also able to cross country ski on Mirror Lake. Just walk your skis onto the lake, step into them and start striding.
Is there dog sledding at Mirror Lake?
We have two dog sledding services, one at each end of Mirror Lake. You can walk the lake to either of these operators. The pups are very welcoming and are specially trained for the job at paw!
What is the most exciting activity around Lake Placid?
Then we have the grand-daddy of all winter experiences – the Lake Placid Toboggan Chute – This link opens in a new browser tab – at the far end of the lake, adjacent to the public beach. Originally a converted wooden ski jump, the structure was razed two years ago and replaced with a brand-new metal chute. People just love this high-speed experience that sends sleds across the lake. Each year, it remains arguably the most popular Facebook post of the season.
Of all the activities mentioned, the only charges you’ll encounter are with the dogs (hey, a dog has to eat), and the toboggan chute.
When you visit our Adirondack ski hotel, you soon find out that skiing and riding are just several of our many winter experiences.
