Lake Placid – It’s hard to believe, but in mid-August, we are now seeing some leaves turn to fall colors around the Lake Placid area.
The summer has presented equal parts warm, sunny weather and enough rain to prompt verdant growth. But from now until mid-October, expect to see a gradual change to red, orange and yellow.
If you’re thinking of a foliage trip, we suggest beginning in the Adirondacks. We are the first region to welcome fall foliage and the first to see it end.

From the Northern sections of Upstate New York, you can just gradually work your way south where the season begins later and lasts into November.
When you come here this fall, please take note of several noteworthy events to enhance your stay.
We start with the Whiteface Mountain Oktoberfest Sept. 21-22, presented by Saratoga Eagle. Great German beers, brats, lederhosen, lots of oompah music, gondola rides and more. There’s even a shuttle service.
A week later, Sept. 27-29, Lake Placid welcomes the UCI Mountain Bike World Series at Mount Van Hoevenberg. See racing action in cross country, short track and cross-country marathon. Enjoy the action and passion of these races as the series makes its first appearance in our region.
Figure skating fans, especially those who recall the era of the figures, can head to the Olympic Center for the World Figure and Fancy Skating Championships. The competition runs from
Oct. 9-13. Last year, Debbie Thomas, 1988 Olympic bronze medalist, headlined the event.
At the same time, the Flaming Leaves Festival is set for Oct. 12-13, generally the peak of the fall for foliage enjoyment. The main event is the USA Nordic National Championships. This will take place on the artificial surfaces of the Olympic Ski Jumping Complex and is a preview of February’s World Cup ski jumping on snow. You’ll also enjoy live music, arts and crafts, frosty cold beverages, zipline and a gondola ride at the Flaming Leaves Festival.
