Dog-Friendly Winter Getaway Activities In Lake Placid

LAKE PLACID – There is nothing so heartwarming and joyous as seeing a happy dog bouncing through the snow. Kind of like a porpoise moving up and down through water, dogs on a mission have that same appearance in the powder.

Being a dog-friendly hotel in Lake Placid, it’s no surprise that we have a whole host of recommendations for the perfect winter getaway for you and your furry friends. From seeing your four-legged family members have a blast frolicking in the woods, bounding along frozen Mirror Lake in front of our hotel, walking through our Main Street business district and then returning to AAA Four Diamond luxury for a much-needed nap.

The Mirror Lake Inn has 40 rooms that can accommodate dogs – they must be 70 pounds or less. Once they are here, our winter wonderland is available to them. We, as their family members, can enjoy being outside with them enjoying it all together.

Some popular hikes we can take with our pets are offered at Henry’s Woods, Heaven Hill Farm and the Peninsula Nature Trails. The former provides a good workout for humans and animals as the trail complex can rise to about 30 stories. However, there are options and no need to venture to the summit unless all are game for it. Other trails in the network are invigorating but much less dramatic, and very suitable for mountain biking and fat tire biking year-round.

At Heaven Hill Farm, the three-mile walk is more idyllic as pets and owners stride through wooded trails and meadows.

The Peninsula is good for hiking, running and biking, but pets must be kept on a leash. You can access the area by vehicle but that ends at the private roads.

In addition to these, there are many trailheads very close to the hotel that will take you in and out of seclusion – great for the two and four-legged creatures. Get more trail info here.

If you and Scout are headed into our great outdoors, let’s remember that the rules of good health apply to us and them, namely the need to eat and hydrate as well as proper attire from head to toe. The longer the venture, the more intake you and the dog will require. Humans should dress in layers.

Should you need pet care while in Lake Placid, there are two veterinary practices within a few minutes of the hotel, High Peaks Animal Hospital and Lake Placid Animal Hospital, both rated 4.5 out of five stars. Our local pet shop, Man and Beast, is located at the opposite end of Main Street and is well-stocked. If Rosie need a spa, try Pretty Paws Pet Grooming which comes with rave reviews.

This brings to mind the need to bring your pet’s medical documentation, just in case. As they say, if you bring it, you won’t need it.

We are happy to say that pets and owners can share in so many activities, making us a complete family destination. Well, OK, so maybe Radar can’t take the bobsled ride, but otherwise…..
