Event Cancellations in Lake Placid to Help Social travelers

LAKE PLACID – Travelers to Lake Placid over the years have realized that this two-time Winter Olympic village in Upstate New York is in high demand as a host for many national and international events. It’s beautiful Adirondack lake and mountain setting has drawn event organizers to discuss their events with local leaders, and more often than not, an agreement has taken place.

In summer, that lineup features marathons, Ironman triathlon races, horse shows, lacrosse and rugby tournaments, figure skating and even hockey tournaments and camps. But the onset of the coronavirus has changed all that in a variety of ways. Due to the nature of these competitions and the numbers involved, they have been canceled through August. This has been a financial blow to the community as these events are a form of insurance – they occur no matter the weather – and with significant numbers of people. That paradigm, however, has now shifted. The insurance policy that guarantees spending and economic vitality is gone for this summer, but greatly anticipated to return in the summer of 2021.

While the cancellation of these iconic events is disappointing to local business owners and fans alike, it does present a unique opportunity for prospective visitors to the Lake Placid area. Visitors can look forward to a quieter, more tranquil experience while visiting the many shops along Main Street, taking in an experience at the historic Olympic venues, or just relaxing on the lakeshore.

The AAA Four Diamond Mirror Lake Inn, which reopened full-time on June 26, has never catered exclusively to event participants, but has attracted its share due to the very nature of the iconic resort’s offerings, service and setting. During our COVID reopening, complete with elevated safety protocols, the Inn is extending several outstanding “welcome back” promotions geared for those who’ve been longing to get out and travel a reasonable distance for short to longer staycations.
