LAKE PLACID – Lake Placid fall festivals are just around the corner, and they all happen as our palette of colors are changing.
After the blues of summer and prior to the whites of winter, come the reds, yellows and oranges of autumn.
Cool nights and warm days seem to trip the switch, as each day we are seeing a bit more of this seasonal changeover. And as each day passes, we are getting closer to festival season.
If you’re planning a trip to the Adirondacks and the Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa, we suggest you put these Lake Placid fall festivals on your schedule.
Whiteface Oktoberfest
Oktoberfest at Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington, rated a must-visit by SKI Magazine, comes a bit earlier this year. It’s slated for September 22-23, complete with lederhosen, oompah sounds, culinary delicacies from the Black Forest, tall steins of our favorite German “biers”, rides to the summit of Little Whiteface on the Cloudsplitter Gondola, live music and dancing from the old country, and a pre-season ski and ride vibe that reminds us that merely two months later, we’ll be yodeling down the mountain.
Oktupperfest
Meanwhile, just 30 minutes from Lake Placid, check out the annual OkTupperfest in Tupper Lake. This is set for Sept. 30 from 11 AM – 6 PM in the Municipal Park. There’ll be entertainment for all ages, food, beverages and activities.

Flaming Leaves Festival
A week later, Oct. 6-7, we’re back to Lake Placid as the next fall festival moves to the Olympic Jumping Complex, on Route 73. It’s the annual Flaming Leaves Festival, with a ski jumping competition, live music, lawn games, numerous craft vendors and children’s games, rides up the chairlift and ensuing 26-story elevator ride to the top of the 120-meter ski jump tower, blues, brews and barbecues!
At this point, fall colors in the region will be close to peak, and from your perch atop the jump, the view will never be more magnificent. Insider tip: make sure your electronic device is fully charged.
This Lake Placid fall festival occurs during our long Columbus Day weekend, coupled with Canadian Thanksgiving – and there’s nothing like a good North American celebration!
Lake Placid Film Forum
The Lake Placid Film Forum is the last of the Lake Placid fall festivals. After being held in June for its first 17 years, the 18th year will see this festival move to Oct. 26-28. The Adirondacks premier film-related event, the film forum screens the best in independent films, documentaries, foreign-language titles, shorts, silent movies and talking classics. It’s primary venues are the Palace Theater – walking distance from the Mirror Lake Inn – and the Lake Placid Center for the Arts.
