Lake Placid – If you are angling for one of the great recreational activities here in Upstate New York, bring your fly rod and settle in for some Lake Placid fishing.
The Mirror Lake Inn has received news that the state Department of Environmental Conservation has stocked N.Y. waters this spring with over two million trout – there’s bountiful fish in New York State! Over 10,000 of them have been fed into Mirror Lake and Lake Placid lake. The nice thing is that from our hotel you won’t have to travel far to access that catch.
The Inn overlooks Mirror Lake. That means just walk to the shoreline, get a complimentary boat, and work your way into position for a laker or two. If you wish to be out there for the long haul, you may rent a boat here in the village. Don’t forget to bring some food and drink. Please remember – Mirror Lake does not allow motorized vessels.
Just up the street from the hotel, you will find the boat launch to nearby Lake Placid lake, which has an average depth of about 50 feet. Motorized boats are allowed on this much bigger body of water. Lake trout abound, and so does the Northern Pike in the shallower waters in springtime. But as the weather warms, Northern Pike seek deeper, cooler environments.

Also, with summer upon us in the Adirondacks, we’re on the cusp of the largemouth and smallmouth bass fishing season. Check rocky shorelines for this catch.
In addition, the Shangri La Preserve in Duane, N.Y., about 40 minutes from Lake Placid, is a must for those who seek salmon fishing in New York.
If you prefer moving water, there is no shortage, led by the Ausable River, one of the nation’s great fly-fishing streams. The Ausable River covers 512 square miles and 94 miles of river channel, fed by over 70 streams. You can see the river as you drive to Lake Placid on Rt. 73 from Keene Valley, and along Rt. 86 between Lake Placid, Whiteface Mountain and Wilmington.
In addition to the East and West branches of the Ausable River, you can enjoy a multitude of fishing experiences in the region. The Saranac River is easily accessible from Saranac Lake and Bloomingdale; enjoy the Saranac Lakes Chain; and venture further west to the St. Regis Lakes.
The Mirror Lake Inn is fortunate to offer expert guides to make Lake Placid fishing a memorable experience. Gary Marchuk of Bear Cub Adventures is a native who has worked with our guests for many years. Ken Kalil of Upstate Outfitters is an Orvis-endorsed fly-fishing guide. Our own Andrew Weibrecht, a two-time Olympic medalist in alpine skiing, grew up fishing these waters. Together, they have created the annual Mirror Lake Inn Fly Fishing School each May.
New to the Mirror Lake Inn is Zac Horrocks, proprietor of Horrocks Outfitting. Zac (cover shot of the blog) is a seventh generation Adirondacker and a state-licensed professional guide.
As spring temps are now climbing, our lakes and rivers are ready. Sounds like a good time to plan a Lake Placid fishing excursion.

Finally, we’d be remiss not to mention the dos and don’ts of fishing. According to New York State, one must be 16 and older and have a fishing license. Each fisherman is limited to five brown, brook and rainbow trout per day. No more than two may be longer than 12 inches,
With this as your background preparation, there’s no better time than now to begin casting. Please reach out to the abovementioned guides, or call the Mirror Lake Inn directly at 518-523-2544. Our onsite staff awaits your call.
