Lake Placid means fun for the holidays

Lake Placid – With the best December snow in years, together with a holiday lineup of activities, this month will be a memorable one around the Lake Placid region.

The snow and colder weather came upon us quickly in November. This was good news for skiers and snowboarders as Whiteface Mountain was able to open for the two weekends prior to Thanksgiving. The Olympic Mountain is now operating daily for the remainder of the season and adding more terrain and lifts on an almost daily basis.

Cross country skiers were taking their strides in the Adirondack woods and back country the past few weeks, but on Dec. 7, the Olympic Sports Complex at Mt. Van Hoevenberg officially opened. Check their web page for the snow report as well as the Legacy Tour, climbing wall and hiking conditions.

The Sheffield Speed Skating Oval, where Eric Heiden captured five Olympic gold medals in 1980, is open to the public. It’s the same 400-meter track that saw the American stride to glory. During the holiday period, the public can skate each afternoon and evening.

There’s no better way to get in the holiday spirit than by participating in the Holiday Village Stroll. Kids and adults have a blast every year. It’s coming up Dec. 13-15. The Mirror Lake Inn will offer Cookies with Santa on Dec. 15 from 11:30-1:30. Please stop by.

Future hockey stars will be on display in the Lake Placid Olympic Center Dec. 20-22 when the 10th annual Miracle Holiday Classic hits the ice. A week earlier, on Dec. 14, a mite jamboree comes to town, featuring hockey youth in the U6 and U8 divisions.
