LAKE PLACID – The headline of this blog is quite daunting: what to do in the Adirondacks when winter weather breaks and layers of clothing get put away.
The Adirondacks in Upstate New York offer one of the nation’s great playgrounds. Whether you enjoy land, water or air, this place we call God’s Country never disappoints. For generations, adults, kids and dogs just can’t get enough of the ADK, and especially Lake Placid.
Hiking, fishing, swimming, boating, golf, tennis only scratches the surface. We have 46 High Peaks in the Adirondacks of varying degrees of difficulty. Some, like Cobble Lookout and Baxter Mountain, are nice, low-impact trips that can be completed in a matter of a few hours or less.
Others, however, such as Mount Marcy and Algonquin, require precise planning and experience. Mount Marcy, at 5,344 feet, is the state’s highest peak. It is a 17-mile hike round trip. Algonquin is a 10.2 mile out and back trek and is also considered challenging.

PLEASE be prepared for any hike by carrying a change of clothing, food, water, a compass and fully-charged phone with backup power.
For the shorter hikes, man’s best friend can serve as a great companion. The exercise is good for both master and pup, and when your four-legged hiker returns to one of our dog-friendly rooms, rest assured that your pet will most assuredly rest.
If you’d rather cast your rod, just walk from the Mirror Lake Inn to either Mirror Lake or Lake Placid lake. The nearby Ausable River, which runs right past the ski jumping complex outside the village, is one of the nation’s great flyfishing waters. We also offer local fishing guides that will take you to secret nooks known only to them.
Swimming and boating are just a walk down to our private beach. The boats are complimentary and on a first-come, first-served basis.

Golf is offered at our championship 18-hole course located at our sister property, the Whiteface Club and Resort, located just 2.8 miles from the Mirror Lake Inn. You can find our golf package on the Mirror Lake Inn website.
If tennis is your jam, our guests have complimentary use of the court at the inn, as well as access to the Har-Tru courts at the Whiteface Club and Resort. Tennis director Ethan Weibrecht offers lessons for all members of the family.
Lake Placid is a very welcoming resort for families, and the Mirror Lake Inn, family-owned since 1977, is accustomed to having youngsters on the property. In addition to the above-mentioned activities, just take a stroll from the inn to our Main Street. Depending on the night of the week, summer concerts are offered in the village park. There are ice cream shops on both sides of the park, and lots of locally-owned stores, outlets and restaurants that appeal to and serve all age groups.
Finally, you might enjoy an overhead view of the Adirondacks. If so, take a drive to the edge of Lake Placid on Rte. 73 where our municipal airport offers a one-hour sightseeing excursion above the mountain tops. From up there, you’ll get an even better appreciation of the vastness of the Adirondacks and our six-million-acre home.
When booking a stay at the Mirror Lake Inn, please call our onsite reservationists at 518-523-2544. They are ready to not only guide you to the appropriate lodging for you and family, but can also act as a concierge ready to dispense local information making your experience here more meaningful.
