Lake Placid – Longer days, more sun, warmer temps. It could only mean springtime has arrived in Lake Placid and the Adirondacks.
A good, old-fashioned winter is gradually melting away in late March, but given the nature of the previous four months, we plan to reap the benefits for a few more weeks.
Consistent snowfall brought our community’s snowbanks to levels that harkened back to the 60s, while relentless temperatures below freezing enabled Whiteface Mountain snowmakers to ply their craft day after day. The result was a significant base of snow and a ski and ride experience that will take us to tax-day and beyond, barring the unforeseen.

A quick glance at the two-week forecast indicates temperatures in the 20s this week and rising through the 30s and only into the 40s by April 8. So if you like your winter activities in the spring, Lake Placid and vicinity are ready to accommodate you over the coming weeks. Come mid-week and enjoy minimal crowds with favorable pricing. If mogul skiing is your jam, consider entering the Apple Butter Open at 12:00 on March 28. Get there early to register.
As our event season is concluding in Upstate New York, we do have one competition of note and that’s the North American Cup bobsled and skeleton races March 26-27 at Mt. Van Hoevenberg. This is sled racing at breakneck speeds, and it’s just a few minutes out of town on Rt. 73.
While visiting our Lake Placid resort, check out the Lake Placid Olympic Museum, located in the Olympic Center. That’s also where you can get arena tours Thursday to Sunday at the site of the 1980 Miracle on Ice.
On March 28, there will be a Full Moon Party at Mt. Van Hoevenberg starting at 5 PM.
If you’re staying with us, remember that our new Nordic Spa, with hot tub and adjacent sauna, is open year-round. It’s a great way to soothe any aching bones after a day in our great outdoors.
