Upstate New York Road Trip

Lake Placid – Cruising into Upstate New York, no matter the starting point, remains one of the traveling’s great pleasures. Especially with summer getting closer, interest is high as folks are ready to explore.

Getting here is easy, thanks to our interstate highway system that can point you our way whether you live in Buffalo, New York City, Albany or near the Canadian border. The New York Thruway and Adirondack Northway (I-87 and I-90) are the primary interstates.

Also, I-88, connecting Binghamton with Albany, is very helpful and typically devoid of traffic. It will lead travelers to the back door of the Adirondacks.

Interstate 81 is another excellent feeder, running from the southern United States, to Binghamton, through Syracuse and up to Canada. As you head north, look for Route 3 East at Watertown. This highway will bring you to Saranac Lake, just 10 miles from Lake Placid.

Our region in the Adirondacks is highly sought-after and rightfully so. What’s better than a lineup of Lake Placid summer activities? From our two-week horse show starting June 25, to the Ironman Triathlon on July 21, CanAm Rugby Tournament July 26-28, and the Summit Lacrosse competition July 31- Aug. 4, there’s great action most every week. And it’s not all summer related. You can get ice time in the Lake Placid Olympic Center, so bring your skates, and enjoy several sessions.

Other Lake Placid activities include the Songs at Mirror Lake concert series on Tuesday nights and the Lake Placid Sinfonietta on Wednesday evenings. Both are offered at Mid’s Park on Main Street and are free of charge. Just get to the park early enough with your picnic chair or blanket and claim a spot on the lawn. There are various eateries near the site.

This fall, the UCI Mountain Bike World Series will make its initial stop in Lake Placid from Sept. 27-29 at Mt. Van Hoevenberg. It promises to be an action-packed event against the backdrop of our fall foliage.

As you make your plans for the summer and fall, we hope you’ll include a New York road trip, and know that the Mirror Lake Inn is conveniently located within minutes of the Lake Placid activities you want to enjoy.
