Viewing the Great American Eclipse from the Adirondacks

Lake Placid – The countdown to April 8 is now underway in the Lake Placid region of the Adirondacks.

The Great American Eclipse will occur that afternoon. Eclipse time in Lake Placid will be from 3:25 PM to 3:28 PM Eastern time. Bring your certified glasses if you plan on being in Upstate New York and wish to view it. Normal sunglasses do not provide the required protection.

The path of totality runs right through our region of Upstate NY

This region will be rife with eclipse chasers from all over the nation as we are in the path of totality. Those travelers will have a wealth of choices here for prime viewing.

At the Mirror Lake Inn, our private beach will be open from 11 AM to 5 PM for hotel guests. That spot will offer prime viewing as will The Cottage Café where the eclipse will occur in the sky right outside the front door.

Our sister property, the Whiteface Club and Resort, will host a Solar Eclipse Viewing Party with live music, scrumptious buffet, specialty cocktails and ISO-certified glasses. Activities begin at 11 AM. Cost is $100 per person. Make non-refundable reservations by calling 518-523-2551.

The Olympic venues are all on board with viewing parties. Weather is expected to be quite comfortable, allowing you to choose from the Sheffield Speed Skating Oval on Main Street, the Olympic Jumping Complex, Mt. Van Hoevenberg and Whiteface Mountain. The ski and ride center will offer a $40 lift ticket on that day, but lifts will close at 2:00 to get a head start on the party. In case of inclement weather, the eclipse will be live streamed into the Olympic Center.

Nearby Saranac Lake will have a complete solar festival starting April 4 with daily activities going beyond April 8.

Totality in Tupper will find The Wild Center and The Adirondack Sky Center and Observatory, both in Tupper Lake, ready to host eclipse aficionados.

There are a few things to keep in mind for this once in a lifetime event.

Pet owners might expect their four-legged family members to act a bit differently. For starters, please protect them and their eyes from the eclipse. Since it will get completely dark for a few minutes, our animals might think it’s bed time.

Also, check with your iPhone, Samsung or Android provider to make sure you will not damage the lens on your camera.

The next total solar eclipse will occur in 375 years. Hence, we suggest you take advantage of this one.

We’ll have more information on this event in the coming days. Please keep an eye on our Facebook page for more eclipse news. Special glasses not needed.
