Fishing in Lake Placid, New York

LAKE PLACID – If you are angling for one of the great recreational activities here in Upstate New York, bring your fly rod and settle in for some Lake Placid fishing.

The Mirror Lake Inn has received news that the state Department of Environmental Conservation is stocking New York waters with over 1.8 million trout. The nice thing is that from our hotel, or anywhere in Lake Placid, you won’t have to travel far to have access to that catch.

The Inn overlooks Mirror Lake. That means just walk to the shoreline, get a complimentary boat, and work your way into position for a laker or two. If you wish to be out there for the long haul, you may rent a boat here in the village. Don’t forget to bring some food and drink. Please remember – Mirror Lake does not allow motorized vessels.

Just up the street from the hotel, you will find the boat launch to nearby Lake Placid lake. Motorized boats are allowed on this much bigger body of water. Lake trout abound, and so does the Northern Pike in the shallower waters in springtime. But as the weather warms, Northern Pike seek deeper, cooler environments.

If you prefer moving water, there is no shortage, led by the Ausable River, one of the nation’s great trout-fishing streams. The Ausable River covers 512 square miles and 94 miles of river channel, fed by over 70 streams. You can see the river as you drive to Lake Placid from Keene Valley and along Rt. 86 between Lake Placid, Whiteface Mountain and Wilmington.

In addition to the East and West branches of the Ausable River, you can enjoy a multitude of fishing experiences in the region. The Saranac River is easily accessible from Saranac Lake and Bloomingdale; enjoy the Saranac Lakes Chain; and venture further west to the St. Regis Lakes.

The Mirror Lake Inn is fortunate to offer three expert guides to make Lake Placid fishing a memorable experience. Gary Marchuk of Bear Cub Adventures is a native who has worked with our guests for many years. Ken Kalil of Upstate Outfitters is an Orvis-endorsed fly-fishing guide. And our own Andrew Weibrecht, a two-time Olympic medalist in alpine skiing, grew up fishing these waters. They have created the inaugural Mirror Lake Inn Fly Fishing School, May 13-15.

As spring temps are now climbing, our lakes are ready to free themselves of winter snow and ice, while rivers are open in places and will soon run freely. Sounds like a good time to plan a Lake Placid fishing excursion.
